We are pleased to share with you that\u202fthe Watch List Approach<\/a>\u202fhas been published in the\u202fCanadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999<\/em>\u202f(CEPA)\u202fRegistry.<\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 13,\u202f2023, the\u202fStrengthening Environmental Protection for a Healthier Canada Act<\/em>\u202fbecame law, amending CEPA. Section 75.1 of the amended CEPA states that\u202f\u201cthe\u202fMinister of the Environment shall compile and may amend from time to time a list that specifies substances that the Minister of the Environment and the Minister of Health have reason to suspect are capable of becoming toxic or that have been determined to be capable of becoming toxic\u201d, collequially known as the \u201cWatch List”.\u202fThe Watch List<\/a> will only apply to substances that are not listed on Schedule 1 of CEPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u202fIn fall 2024, activities were undertaken to engage\u202fthe public and interested stakeholders\u202fas part of consultation on the\u202fproposed\u202fWatch List\u202fApproach. Feedback and input\u202fwas\u202freceived at stakeholder engagement sessions and\u202fthrough\u202fa 60-day public comment period.\u202fThe comments received have been considered in the development of the final\u202fWatch List\u202fApproach document.\u202fThe Watch List Approach\u202fdescribes\u202fthe administration of the Watch List.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u202fThe Watch List\u202fwill be a communication product with no regulatory or legislative impacts.\u202fIt\u202fwill not impose new or\u202fadditional\u202frequirements or restrictions on a substance.\u202fThe Watch List\u202fwill be compiled from existing information and will not supersede or\u202fmodify\u202fany\u202fact, regulation, or legal obligation, including an obligation to comply under any instruments referred to under CEPA, including statutory or legislative instruments.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Watch List will be published in the CEPA Registry and will be updated\u202fperiodically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
