The investigation is ongoing and there continues to be a ban on importing pistachios from Iran.\u00a0<\/p><p>The second incident has been slightly less well publicized but is, in some cases, potentially more significant than the pistachio issue.\u00a0 Not for human health but for hog farming in North America.\u00a0 A Vietnamese pork processor was discovered in 2025 to have used diseased pork meat to produce canned meat as well as pork-based spring rolls.\u00a0 The diseased pork had African Swine Fever virus in it. Some of this meat made it into Canada through illegal importation by a Canadian importer, possibly through the UK.<\/p><p>The risk with these products and African Swine Fever is strictly limited to pig health, not human health.\u00a0 Because there is no known way to vaccinate or otherwise treat hogs infected with African Swine Fever, North America\u2019s only way to prevent it infecting hogs here is to exclude it from entry.\u00a0\u00a0<i><u>This single importer could potentially have caused a significant cull of pigs all over North America, similar to the one China underwent starting in 2018<\/u><\/i>.\u00a0 China lost an estimated\u00a0<i><u>27.9 million metric tons of its pork output<\/u><\/i>\u00a0to African Swine Fever\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details?pubid=107924\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details?pubid=107924\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details?pubid=107924<\/a><\/p><p>CFIA has suspended the licence for the importer responsible for importing this illegal meat product.\u00a0<\/p><p><a title=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/inspection-and-enforcement\/actions-taken\/licences\/vtl-foods-trading-limited\" href=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/inspection-and-enforcement\/actions-taken\/licences\/vtl-foods-trading-limited\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/inspection-and-enforcement\/actions-taken\/licences\/vtl-foods-trading-limited<\/a><\/p><p>The decision was based on the following non-compliances:<\/p><p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0insufficient import controls,<\/p><p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0misdeclaration of goods traded internationally,<\/p><p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and the importation of meat products from a non-approved country.<\/p><p><a title=\"https:\/\/news.tuoitre.vn\/vietnam-province-urges-residents-to-stop-using-pork-products-from-scandal-plagued-well-established-food-processing-firm-103260113131123776.htm\" href=\"https:\/\/news.tuoitre.vn\/vietnam-province-urges-residents-to-stop-using-pork-products-from-scandal-plagued-well-established-food-processing-firm-103260113131123776.htm\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/news.tuoitre.vn\/vietnam-province-urges-residents-to-stop-using-pork-products-from-scandal-plagued-well-established-food-processing-firm-103260113131123776.htm<\/a><\/p><p>The move follows revelations that Halong Canfoco, the manufacturer of the canned pork products allegedly used pork infected with African swine fever as raw material for canned food production. This is adulteration for economic gain on a potentially disastrous outcome.<\/p><p>On September 8 last year, Hai Phong police discovered two trucks transporting 1,274.5 kilograms of pork of unknown origin that showed signs of spoilage and later tested positive for African swine fever.<\/p><p>Subsequent searches led authorities to seal four cold storage warehouses containing over 130 metric tons of frozen pork linked to Halong Canfoco, all of which were later destroyed.<\/p><p>On September 12, investigators launched criminal proceedings for violations of food safety regulations.<\/p><p>On December 24 the same year, investigators issued decisions to prosecute nine suspects for supplying and trading food originating from dead or sick pigs infected with African swine fever.<\/p><p>By January 10, the company\u2019s CEO Truong Sy Toan and three quality control employees were arrested for their alleged roles in managing, storing, and using diseased pork in production.\u00a0<\/p><p>The company annouced the cessation of its production in Hai Phong following this arrest.<\/p><p><a title=\"https:\/\/theinvestor.vn\/ha-long-canned-food-ceo-arrested-over-diseased-pork-case-d18090.html#:~:text=Authorities%20said%20the%20individuals%20played,violations%20of%20food%20safety%20regulations\" href=\"https:\/\/theinvestor.vn\/ha-long-canned-food-ceo-arrested-over-diseased-pork-case-d18090.html#:~:text=Authorities%20said%20the%20individuals%20played,violations%20of%20food%20safety%20regulations\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/theinvestor.vn\/ha-long-canned-food-ceo-arrested-over-diseased-pork-case-d18090.html#:~:text=Authorities%20said%20the%20individuals%20played,violations%20of%20food%20safety%20regulations<\/a>.<\/p><p>From the contaminated meat, the company processed more than 1.7 tons of finished pate products, equivalent to around 14,000 cans, from September 6-7, 2025, police said.<\/p><p>Other products were also found to be contaminated, including more than 4,000 kg of spring rolls and over 3,000 kg of premium spring rolls testing positive for African swine fever virus.<\/p><p><a title=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/animal-health\/terrestrial-animals\/diseases\/reportable\/african-swine-fever\/fact-sheet\" href=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/animal-health\/terrestrial-animals\/diseases\/reportable\/african-swine-fever\/fact-sheet\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/en\/animal-health\/terrestrial-animals\/diseases\/reportable\/african-swine-fever\/fact-sheet<\/a><\/p><p>African swine fever (ASF) is a serious viral disease of pigs that can cause fever, internal bleeding and high death rates.
